How we verify

Every rule and rate on this site has a source attached and a date it was last checked. Here's how that works.

Sourcing tiers

Tier 1 — Official

State revenue department notices and statutes, city code, Airbnb Help Center tax and permit pages.

Can support a Confirmed status.

Tier 2 — Credible report

News outlets, an Airbnb email several hosts received, a host's screenshot.

Reported only, until a Tier 1 source agrees.

Tier 3 — Lead

Reddit posts, blogs, third-party guides.

Nothing published; triggers a check.

  • No fact is published without a Tier 1 or 2 source.
  • Rates are copied exactly as the source states them — never combined or rounded.
  • When sources disagree, the page says so and the field is marked Reported.
  • Every jurisdiction is re-verified at least every 30 days.

What the statuses mean

ConfirmedA person verified it against a Tier 1 source.

ReportedCredible but not yet confirmed by an official source.

SupersededReplaced by a newer confirmed change.

The review process

Automated monitors read official, Airbnb and news sources every week. When a page changes in a way that matters, the change is published right away, marked Reported and labeled as automatically detected, and each place page shows what its sources say as of the latest check. A person then reviews the change against the source before it is marked Confirmed or an email alert goes out. Host tips go through the same review.
